Undergraduate Programs

Professional Opportunities for Students (Undergraduate and Graduate)

CAIT supports and encourages students to participate in the following professional organizations:
Rutgers University Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
Rutgers Student Chapter of the Institute for Transportation Engineers (ITE)
Rutgers Chapter of American Institute of Aeronautics and Aeronautics (AIAA)

Transportation Engineering and Safety Undergraduate Intern (Summer 2009)

CAIT's Transportation Safety Resource Center (TSRC) is the vital link in a collaborative partnership created to provide resources and solutions to increase safety on New Jersey’s roads.

Successful candidates for this internship will have completed courses in transportation engineering and have a general understanding of transportation theory. The selected student will be exposed to transportation engineering and safety through a two‐pronged internship experience. They will travel to the New Jersey Department of Transportation to participate in a civil engineering trainee (CET) capacity, under the direction of an experienced DOT engineer. Second, the student will report to TSRC to participate in a variety of safety program initiatives, support safety program efforts, and learn the “science of safety.”

Applications for the 2009 internship are currently closed. Information about future offerings should be directed to Sarah Weissman, TSRC Program Manager, at scweiss@rci.rutgers.edu.

CAIT-NJDOT Undergraduate Internship Program

The CAIT-New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) internship program is designed to expose undergraduate students to the scores of areas NJDOT is involved in: road building, homeland security, maritime, mass transit development, emission standards, aeronautics, and many more.

The program is mutually beneficial to both students and NJDOT. Students gain practical experience solving real-world problems, while the agency has the opportunity recruit new talent for its workforce and benefit from fresh perspectives students can bring.

K-12 Programs

Garrett Morgan Academy

In partnership with the Paterson, New Jersey, public school system, CAIT supports and participates in activities with the Garrett Morgan Academy, a four-year high school program that offers a college prep and pre-engineering program focused on preparing students for careers in transportation. Garrett Morgan graduated its first class in 2004.

New Jersey Summer Transportation Institute

The New Jersey Summer Transportation Institute is a four-week summer program that introduces incoming high school students to a variety of careers, information, and experiences in the transportation industry. It is offered jointly by the Garrett Morgan Academy and CAIT.

The program acquaints 25 urban high school students with careers in transportation-related fields, including highway construction, public transportation management, urban planning, and environmental protection. It also provides instruction in the fundamental math, science, and computer skills needed to pursue these careers.

The curriculum is taught by Rutgers and Garrett Morgan Academy instructors and supplemented by guest speakers from state transportation and law enforcement agencies. The program also includes field trips to museums, airports, and the Rutgers lab for advanced pavement materials. As an example of a term project, students may build a storage shed modeled after a train depot for a local day care center.

The New Jersey program is part of the National Summer Transportation Institute, a national effort funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Civil Rights, to promote a strong and diverse workforce in the transportation industry.
