Port Industry Performance NSF Project Completed
CAIT’s Freight and Maritime Program (FMP) completed a project funded through the NSF Partnerships for Innovation Program.
The task was to model processes inside and outside marine container terminals and quantify interactions among different stakeholders by developing an integrated analytical and simulation tool. The researchers examined processes from vessel berth scheduling to truck access networks and terminal gate processes.
Partners included the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), terminal operators, the New York Shipping Association, the New Jersey Department of Transportation, and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, who were all actively involved throughout the three-year project. They provided data and shaped scenarios for capital and operational improvements that were then tested using the simulation platform.
During the process, FMP formed international partnerships and signed memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with the Institute of Shipping Logistics in Bremen, Germany; the Maritime Studies Program at Santos Catholic University, Brazil; and the Institute of Transport and Maritime Management, Antwerp, Belgium.
Visibility for the project was promoted through more than 40 refereed journal articles and conference proceedings reports. The FMP team was also invited to present to the Hai Phong mobility initiative group in Vietnam.
During the course of the study, it became apparent that there is a great lack of data for studying the dynamic nature of terminal and associated truck operations. FMP presented the findings to the Association of Bi-State Motor Carriers, who along with the other partners, teamed with FMP to develop a related research proposal.
