FMP Gets FTA Grant Management Process Project
CAIT Freight and Maritime Program (FMP) was awarded a one-year $200,000 grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The project aims to research, evaluate and demonstrate processes and performance measures used by other Federal agencies to award and manage grants and the methods these agencies use to evaluate the effectiveness of the programs they fund. The main goal of the project is to identify and recommend on the impact and value of how the FTA might incorporate best effective practices employed by these other agencies. FMP program director Maria Boilé will serve as principal investigator. Partnering on the project are John Betak and Stephen O’Connor from Collaborative Solutions, LLC, an industry management consulting firm based in Albuquerque, NM.
NSF Port Industry Performance Project Complete
CAIT’s Freight and Maritime Program (FMP) completed a project funded through the NSF Partnerships for Innovation Program. The task was to model processes inside and outside marine container terminals and quantify interactions among different stakeholders by developing an integrated simulation tool. The researchers examined processes from vessel berth scheduling to truck access networks and terminal gate processes. (September, 2009)
FMP Hosts Students from Greece
Thirty undergraduate senior students and a faculty member from the civil engineering department of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece, visited the Freight and Maritime Program (FMP) at CAIT on May 20. During their visit, students toured FMP’s facilities and spoke with graduate students, research associates, and faculty about ongoing and recently completed FMP projects and the latest in freight and maritime research.
A demonstration of advanced computational hardware and software equipment at the FMP laboratory was provided. Practical applications of FMP modeling capabilities were presented with a demonstration of research the laboratory has been conducting using freight movements and operations at the Port of Newark/Elizabeth that FMP is using to study port-related congestion issues in New Jersey.
The students had the opportunity to experience the lab’s capabilities first-hand and get a glimpse at state-of-the-art maritime research. Presentations from FMP faculty and graduate students rounded out the experience.
This was the first year FMP has hosted the international student informational exchange. Based on the success of this year’s visit, the program has already been scheduled for next year. (May 2009)
