TSRC's Plan4Safety Program Nationally Honored
WASHINGTON - The Roadway Safety Foundation (RSF) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) today recognized the Transportation Safety Resource Center at Rutgers' (TSRC) Plan4Safety program for its efforts to reduce the incidence of unnecessary crashes through the innovative analysis of crash data.
"By collecting and analyzing data on what makes roads unsafe, Plan4Safety is at the forefront of helping us to understand exactly why crashes happen," said Greg Cohen, Executive Director of the Roadway Safety Foundation. "It is clear that highway officials can use this goldmine of information to help reduce the amount of needless crashes occurring on our roads, and Rutgers University should be commended."
"Kyleigh's Law" Approved
Young drivers make up just five percent of the driving population, but account for 12 percent of all car crashes. New Jersey’s GDL program gives these young drivers 12 months of unsupervised practice while limiting the crash-related injuries and fatalities that are so prevalent among this group.
To combat violation of the law and the high incidence of teen crashes, new drivers under the age of 21 will now be required to display two removable, reflective, and highly-visible decals on their vehicles letting others know that they hold a probationary Graduated Driver’s Licenses (GDL).
NJ State Police Use Plan4Safety for Crash Data Analysis
The New Jersey State Police (NJSP) has announced it will use Plan4Safety as the main resource to obtain and analyze crash data within its Field Operations Section. NJSP will use the crash data analysis program developed by TSRC to more effectively pinpoint high-crash areas and develop safety solutions.
TSRC Adopting “12 Months” Safety Program from DHTS
The 12 Months of Traffic Safety program has been an integral piece of safety education for local communities in New Jersey for several years. Noting the importance to continue the “12 Months” initiative and keep it within reach of local communities, the Division of Highway Traffic Safety (DHTS) asked TSRC to assume responsibility for the program and expand resources, outreach, and access.
Some early planned improvements include updating printed materials to enhance communication, providing a better means for locals to request materials, and promoting the program to schools that could benefit from awareness campaigns and resources.
