Matching jobseekers with transit career opportunities
October 2014 – CAIT and several academic, technology, and nonprofit partners have launched the Transit Virtual Career Network (TVCN), aiming to close a looming hiring gap in the transit workforce.
The project was funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
With nearly half of the public transportation workforce expected to retire over the next five to 10 years, human resource professionals in the transit industry aim for this new federally-funded web site to publicize transportation jobs and training opportunities and generate interest to fill gaps in their expanding sector.
Many metro areas—Denver, Washington D.C., Houston, and others—are adding transit services and investing in transit-oriented development to keep up with increased ridership demands, including a trend with millennials preferring public transportation over car ownership. Combined with the wave of retirements, this means there are expansive opportunities for people seeking new options or who are interested in advancing their existing careers in the transportation sector.
Transit is a $55 billion industry that directly employs more than 400,000 workers. Many positions in the industry don't require a four-year college degree and transit agencies frequently offer in-house training for new employees and career advancement opportunities for current personnel.
“Transit has quite a number of entry-level positions with a lot of room for growth due to expected retirements and infrastructure needs,” said Lydia C. Grose, manager of civil engineering at SEPTA in Philadelphia. “In addition, since we provide on-the-ground services to the public 24/7, our industry can’t be outsourced. And we provide on-the-job-training and leadership opportunities; many of our managers and supervisors worked their way up the ladder to get where they are today.”
“We are excited to support an innovative new resource that will help men and women across America obtain the education, training, and resources they need to pursue a career in transportation—and eventually land a job,” said Therese McMillan, acting administrator for the FTA. “Workforce training programs like this one are vitally important to helping people access the ladders of opportunity they need and deserve, so they may join the middle class and secure a brighter future for themselves and their families.”
“By working in transit, you have the satisfaction of helping the public get where they need to go, safely,” said Santiago Osorio, director of operational training, Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County. “If you’re the type who doesn’t like be in a cubicle and wants to be physically active, you can be a mechanic or a transit police officer or fare enforcement monitor. Of course, if you do enjoy an office, transit also employs engineers, planners, analysts, and other people who may work indoors quite often.”
In addition to CAIT, the consortium behind the Transit Virtual Career Network includes the American Association of Community Colleges; the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development (also at Rutgers University); the American Public Transportation Association (APTA); the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB); and XPAND Corporation.
The first two Virtual Career Network portals (www.vcn.org)—covering healthcare and green economy jobs —were launched in 2012 and 2013 respectively and are used by jobseekers, students, and workforce development professionals at American Job Centers, community colleges, and elsewhere nationwide.
The VCN open-source platform was funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and created by a team that included AACC, NAWB, XPAND Corporation, the American Council on Education, the National Association of State Workforce Agencies, DirectEmployers Association, the U.S. Department of Defense, Jobs for the Future, the American Dental Education Association, Ed2Go, and iSeek Solutions.
