Summary:

Traffic control guidelines provided in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTDC) for high-volume multi-lane roadways are limited as MUTCD mainly addresses work performed along the centerline of the roadways and low speed   roads.” Therefore, there is a need to develop safety guidelines and recommendations for traffic control; and work zone safety on high-volume roads for the special group of NJDOT employees. This goal can be achieved by performing the following steps:
•    The review of current practices being used by other states
•    The review of new and emerging technologies
•    The assessment of the technologies
•    The development of work zone control guidelines and recommendations for temporary traffic control.
