National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) ran from April 20-24 and despite the cancelleation of the kickoff events, many online events continued and important resources were shared.
This year’s theme was”Safe Work Zones for All: Protect workers. Protect road users.” It features a poster reminiscent of the World War II poster with Rosie the Riveter. In her place are a male and female roadway worker proclaiming, “We Can Do It!”, which is the original language used in the WWII poster. Michigan chose that image as a reflection of its industrial heritage. Original “Rosies” worked as riveters in an aircraft factory in Ypsilanti, Michigan that built B24 bombers, which is now the site of the American Center for Mobility.
Many organizations, including the FHWA, AASHTO and NHTSA made various resources available free to download and view for educational purposes. While the in-person kick off events were cancelled and as well as various planned activities throughout the week as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, you can find webinars , infographics, and factsheets that came out of this years event.
