Railroad research, technology, and teaching picking up steam at Rutgers
Dr. Xiang Liu is driving rail research and academics at RU. He is PI on several FRA research contracts. One on PTC—a hot topic after recent derailments—and another developing advanced risk analysis. Liu says RU can provide cutting-edge tech solutions and well-“trained” talent that railroads need.

Remote sensing, risk, and resilience
Hurricanes or other extreme events can cause pipeline leaks, joint-weakening, or even ruptures. Dr. Jie Gong developed a mapping, monitoring, and risk-evaluation system combining lidar, infrared imagery analysis, and GIS-based assessment tools to identify vulnerable pipelines after a disaster.
Rowan University Develops Innovative AI to Help FAA Identify Rotorcraft Landing Sites
A project from UTC partners at Rowan University is working to develop an AI-based algorithm that will automate the process of identifying landing sites from video data as well as satellite images—increasing safety and efficiency in the NAS.
RU railroad expert Xiang Liu's study chosen for special issue of TRB journal
A study on managing risk associated with broken rails by Dr. Xiang Liu was chosen for a special issue of Transportation Research Record that collects papers from 2016–2017 that were most frequently cited and mentioned in journal articles, federal reports, and policy publications.
CAIT awarded FHWA $25.5 million contract for long-term bridge study
FHWA selected CAIT as PI on a competitive five-year contract worth up to $25.5 million for the Long-Term Bridge Performance program. Envisioned as 20-year research study, it will be the first nationwide effort to collect uniform quantitative data on bridge performance.
Rutgers Drone Team Helps Engineers Develop As-Built Models of Construction Site
Elizabethtown Gas brought in a Rutgers Drone team to map a gas pipeline replacement project and capture geolocations of newly installed underground infrastructure. The data collected will help the team develop enhanced As-Built models that are vital for informing infrastructure stakeholders in the area.

This project is to acquire a new terrestrial laser scanner - Faro Focus S350 to enable new research studies in digital twining of the built infrastructure to support mitigation of flood threats to critical transit stations and and evaluation of disinfection methods for transportation facilities. -
Digital Twin Platform for Smart Mobility Systems
This proposal will develop a digital twin for urban mobility, the Mobi-Twin platform, focusing on enabling the microscopic accurate modeling and simulation of Urban Mobility System of Systems with the emerging self-driving grade high-resolution 3D data. -
Risk and Resilience Analysis Tool for Asset Management
The primary goal of this proposal is to evaluate and demonstrate the application of prevailing risk and resilience assessment approaches and integrate them in a holistic transportation asset management (TAM) framework. -
Tool to assess the flood vulnerability of its infrastructure
The primary goal of this proposal is to work with NJDOT to develop a new visualization tool and enhanced capacity for NJDOT personnel to assess the flood vulnerability of its infrastructure and assets. -
Assessing Transportation Infrastructure Vulnerability to Coastal Storms
The study intends to develop a decision support tool that can assist infrastructure stakeholders in making decisions at the day-to-day operation level (i.e. evacuation or shutting down of roads and bridges) to protect communities from impeding flooding events as well as in making long-term infrastructure decisions. -
Development of UAS Practical Training for Inspection and Monitoring Activities
The goal is to design and develop training curricula including the development of assessment instruments for deriving both formative and summative learning outcomes. The project will evaluate UAS operations and make recommendations on procedures for inspection to assist decision making by regional agencies. -
Development of modeling framework for segment-level crash risk assessment
The primary goal of this research is to develop a modeling framework for segment-level crash risk assessment considering roadway geometry characteristics and dynamic parameters affecting the crash risk, including temporal characteristic (e.g., season, day of week, time of day), traffic flow characteristics. -
Modeling and simulation in transit stations using computer vision technologies
The goal of this proposal is to model and simulate passenger flows in transit stations using computer vision and agent-based simulation technologies to understand the benefit of infrastructure design or upgrade in terms of changing passenger flow and reducing congestion. -
Simulation of Degradation and Failure of Suspension Bridge Main Cables
The primary goal of this proposal is to develop a well-defined methodology to estimate the remaining strength of a suspension bridge cable that has been exposed to fire. -
