This research is necessary to help the Virginia DOT take advantage of state-of-the-art tools and methods in data analysis and data mining to help them better understand bridge performance in Virginia and to move towards a more data driven and strategic approach to bridge asset management in Virginia. As with most DOT’s, the exigencies of day to day operations result in a more tactical view of asset management. The primary purpose of this proposed laboratory is to provide a resource to VDOT that will support the desired data driven and strategic approach. This research is complementary to the proposed LTBPP Bridge Portal. the PI is a consultant to the LTBPP and has also performed similar research at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Laboratory where he established the bridge management Information Systems laboratory. Also, as noted below, this research fully supports the USDOT Strategic Goal of Infrastructure in a State of Good Repair.
