Nenad Gucunski, PhD
Dr. Nenad Gucunski is professor and chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rutgers University and a CAIT researcher. An internationally recognized expert, Dr. Gucunski has 30+ years of practical and research experience in NDE technologies for bridge assessment and has successfully led multiple large-scale, multi-university-industry-partnership projects into practice before. For example, he was PI for the ANDERS project for Bridge Decks supported by the NIST Technology Innovation Program and led the NDE team for FHWA’s Long Term Bridge Performance Program from 2009-2017. He was also PI for the Strategic Highway Research Program II R06A National Academies project on NDE technologies for concrete bridge decks results of which were implemented by several State DOTs. Dr. Gucunski has served as PI and technical consultant for the U.S. Army Marine Corps, NJDOT, DelDOT, Iowa DOT, Maryland Transportation Auth., Port Auth. of NY & NJ, among others, and understands how to best deliver projects for agency users.
Maurizio Morgese, PhD
Dr. Maurizio Morgese serves as Engineering Research Project Manager at Rutgers CAIT. His primary research focus centers on sensor-based structural health monitoring for both new and existing structures. His expertise lies in implementing mechanistic and computational approaches to assess infrastructure vulnerabilities, quantify capacity loss, and evaluate adaptability to evolving load conditions driven by population growth and global economic expansion. Notably, Dr. Morgese’s experience includes a post-collapse analysis of the Morandi Polcevera viaduct in Genoa, Italy. His pioneering work introduced an analytical method that integrates corrosion, fatigue, and traffic models to assess the remaining service life of structures. Furthermore, his research extends to the development of analytical and computational techniques for damage assessment in concrete and steel structural components, leveraging distributed fiber optic sensors and digital image correlation.
