Laser Instructor Course (In-Person)

Course Description:
The overall learning goal of this course is to furnish the student instructor with the necessary knowledge and skills to instruct other officers in the proper setup, testing and operation of Police Traffic LASER (also referred to as LIDAR) units while adhering to his/her department’s policies and applicable state laws.
This course will improve the familiarity of Police Traffic LASER used for speed measurement, give you the knowledge and certification to be a proficient Police Traffic LASER Instructor. The student instructor will learn about tying together motivation for speed enforcement, including a brief overview of Police Traffic RADAR.
The student instructor will learn basic introduction into a LASER, scientific principles of LASER, measuring speed and distance with LASER, Introduction to operational considerations of LASER, and LASER case law. Through classroom and outside practical exercises utilizing the LASER, the student instructor will be trained on daily set up and testing requirements. Additionally, the student Instructor will be exposed to some of the latest technology of Police Traffic LASERs.
To successfully be designated as a Lidar/Laser Instructor, the Officer must:
1. Utilizing the LASER, clock 25 vehicles and be within +/- 5 MPH overall, which will be documented by the instructor.
2. Successfully complete a written examination and demonstrate instructional skills
Learning Objectives:
- Clarify how speed enforcement reduces crashes and fatalities
- Discuss case law regarding police traffic laser from both technical and operation views
- Recite how time and distance relate to speed
- List the computation methods of the Laser
- Demonstrate basic instructor techniques and visual aids
