The Federal Highway Administration invites comment on the development of guidance for two new electric vehicle charging station programs included in the recently enacted Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law established the National Electric Vehicle Formula Program to strategically deploy an interconnected network of EV charging stations along highway corridors, by providing states with formula funding. The Charging and Fueling Infrastructure discretionary grant program will make competitive grants available to improve public accessibility to electrical vehicle charging and hydrogen, propane and natural gas fueling stations, along designated alternative fuel corridors or other community locations accessible to drivers.
“These programs represent the first-ever national investment in EV charging infrastructure and reflect the Administration’s commitment to combating climate change,” Deputy Federal Highway Administrator Stephanie Pollack said. “Both programs will make EV charging more convenient and provide current and potential car owners with the confidence that they can get their vehicles charged whenever and wherever its needed.”
By expanding access to public EV charging infrastructure, these programs will promote EV purchases and ownership and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For community grants, projects in rural areas and low- and moderate-income neighborhoods and communities will be prioritized. FHWA is especially interested in comments suggesting how the guidance can promote equity in deploying EV charging infrastructure.
