The New Jersey Local Technical Assistance Program (NJLTAP) is pleased to announce that the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) has recently purchased Caterpillar® virtual equipment simulators, significantly expanding its high-quality training opportunities for customers across the state.

The virtual simulators provide a realistic and immersive training environment that allows operators to gain hands-on experience with heavy equipment—without the risks, costs, or logistical challenges of traditional field-based training. These simulators replicate real-world machine behavior, controls, and jobsite scenarios, helping trainees build confidence and competence before operating actual equipment.

Improving Safety and Reducing Risk – One of the primary benefits of virtual simulation training is improved safety. Both recent hires and veteran operators can practice essential skills, learn proper techniques, and make mistakes in a controlled, consequence-free environment. This reduces the likelihood of accidents on the job site, as well as damage to equipment.

Cost-Effective and Accessible Training –The Caterpillar simulators help agencies save money by reducing fuel consumption, equipment wear and tear, and downtime associated with traditional training. Simultaneously that also eliminates the need to take working machines out of service, allowing departments to maintain productivity while still investing in employee development.

Supporting Workforce Development – With workforce recruitment and retention continuing to challenge public agencies, the simulators serve as a powerful tool for onboarding and upskilling employees. Trainees can progress at their own pace, receive immediate feedback, and practice increasingly complex scenarios. This modern training approach appeals to younger workers while also providing seasoned operators with opportunities to refine skills and learn new techniques.

Realistic, Industry-Leading Technology – Developed by Simformation in conjunction with Caterpillar, a global leader in construction and heavy equipment, the simulators feature authentic machine controls that you will encounter on the jobsite. The simulators will track individual users performance over time, tests scores, and remember areas in need of improvement. Users can return for further training and pick up from their saved profile, ensuring that instruction is tailored to to individual needs, ensuring more effective and measurable training outcomes.

The addition of  virtual simulators reinforces NJLTAP’s ongoing commitment to providing innovative, practical, and cost-effective training solutions for New Jersey’s local governments and transportation agencies. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, NJLTAP continues to support safer worksites, stronger workforces, and more efficient public services.
