Leveraging its network of resources and partners as the Region 2 USDOT University Transportation Center, CAIT set up STEM tours with NJIT this fall for its students in the Rutgers Youth Success Program.

This fall students in the Rutgers Youth Success Program at CAIT took a field trip to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) for a tour of their campus and different engineering facilities at the school.

NJIT faculty and staff took the students on a tour of the Welding Lab, Hydraulics Lab, and the NJIT Makerspace—a unique workspace where students, faculty, engineers, designers and more come to collaborate, build prototypes, and test their innovative ideas.

The 10,000 square-foot Makerspace is the largest of its kind in New Jersey and houses the industrial-grade tools and technologies that today’s STEM students must master in order to become tomorrow’s innovators and leaders.

The Rutgers Youth Success Program operates job readiness and career exploration programs with wraparound support for youth from historically marginalized communities to help them overcome the barriers that have prevented pathways to success in the past. Using transportation and infrastructure to create bridges to youth employment opportunities, RYSP leverages the existing network at CAIT to support career-readiness educational events, establish mentorship opportunities, and help students find fulfilling transportation careers.

At NJIT, the students got to experience a university campus, see the innovative technology being used and developed, and engage with different STEM career opportunities that may be of interest to them.
