NJLTAP – Public Sidewalk Curb Ramp Design (In-person)

*The 11th Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) was released December 18, 2023, and went into effect January 18, 2024. We are currently updating related course materials to what is reflected in the most recent version of the MUTCD.

Course Description:
This 1-day workshop will cover the current design guidelines in Sections 5.6.4 through 5.7.4 of the current version of the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Roadway Design Manual for public sidewalk curb ramp design. It will also include the corresponding NJDOT Standard Construction Details and NJDOT Sample Plans for public sidewalk curb ramp design/construction. This workshop will include curb height, pedestrian needs, sidewalk design, parts that make up a curb ramp, types and placement of curb ramps, and dealing with limited right of way, signals and push buttons, islands and driveways. NJDOT Sample Plan curb ramp layout details will be discussed. This workshop will also include the use of the curb ramp type tables in the constructions details and two class problems using these tables.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn how to properly design public sidewalk curb ramps as per the latest NJDOT criteria based on the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG).
  2. Become familiar with the Standard Construction Details and NJDOT Sample Plans for public sidewalk curb ramp design/construction.
  3. Understand the use of the curb ramp type tables in the constructions details and solve two class problems using these tables.

Intended Audience:
State, county and township engineers and engineering consultants involved in the design of public sidewalk curb ramps.
