NJLTAP – Public Sidewalk Curb Ramp Inspection (In-Person)

*The 11th Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) was released December 18, 2023, and went into effect January 18, 2024. We are currently updating related course materials to what is reflected in the most recent version of the MUTCD.

Course Description:
This 1-day workshop will cover the current curb ramp and sidewalk criteria in parts of Sections 5.6.4, 5.7.1, 5.7.3 and 5.7.4 of the current version of the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Roadway Design Manual for public sidewalk curb ramps. It will also include the corresponding NJDOT Standard Construction Details and NJDOT Sample Plans for public sidewalk curb ramp inspection and construction.

This workshop will include curb height, sidewalk criteria, parts that make up a curb ramp, types and placement of curb ramps, and pedestrian accommodations with signals and push buttons, islands and driveways. NJDOT Sample Plan curb ramp layout details will be discussed. This workshop will also include the use of the curb ramp type tables in the constructions details and one class problem using these tables. The use of a smart level for curb ramp inspection will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn how to properly inspect public sidewalk curb ramps as per the latest NJDOT criteria based on the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG).
  2. Become familiar with the Standard Construction Details and NJDOT Sample Plans for public sidewalk curb ramp construction.
  3. Understand the use of the curb ramp type tables in the constructions details and solve one class problems using these tables.

Intended Audience:
Contractors and inspectors involved in the construction of public sidewalk curb ramps.
