Training

NJLTAP – Compliance to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the Public Right-of-Way

  • September 18, 2019
  • 8:30 am–12:30 pm

This workshop is designed to assist local governments with an understanding of the basic minimum requirements for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act to ensure our roadways’ pedestrian network is accessible to all pedestrians. These requirements apply to all state and local governments regardless of their size. This workshop will provide an overview of Federal  laws and regulations governing accessibility compliance in the public rights-of-way, the civil rights responsibilities of the public roadway owners regardless of funding sources, and accessibility standards and guidance for the pedestrian networks along our roads. This workshop will highlight the Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guide (PROWAG) as a good practice to ensure your compliance. If you are applying for, or are a recipient of, New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) local-aid funds, this workshop is strongly recommended.

A general overview of topics covered are:

  • Federal Laws and Regulations and local government responsibilities
  • ADA Self-Evaluations and Transition Plans
  • Landmark court cases
  • Standards and proposed guidelines
  • Sidewalks
  • Curb Ramps
  • Street Crossings
  • Pedestrians signals for the blind, individuals with low vison, and pedestrians with hearing impairment
